Thomas Südhof, M.D.

Co-Chair of Scientific Advisory Board

Thomas is Co-chair of the Scientific Advisory Board at Syndeio Biosciences. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences (2002) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2010). In 2013, he received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on synaptic transmission and vesicle trafficking.

Thomas is currently the Avram Goldstein Professor in the School of Medicine at Stanford University and has been an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 1986. He was also the founding chair of the Department of Neuroscience at UT Southwestern in Dallas, where he served on the faculty until 2008.

Over his research career, spanning more than 40 years, Thomas’s groundbreaking work has transformed understanding of how neurons communicate. His discoveries revealed the molecular mechanisms of neurotransmitter release as well as synapse formation and specification. Thomas obtained his M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of Göttingen and performed his doctoral thesis work at the Max-Planck-Institut für biophysikalische Chemie in Göttingen.
